Self-Advocacy for PWIDDs - Persons with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities

We started the concept of Self-Advocacy training in the year 2013. Parivaar, in collaboration with National Trust, conducted training for all (State Nodal Agency Center) SNAC coordinators in Delhi. This training program aided the coordinators in becoming mentors. With this Seva-in- Action started conducting Self-Advocacy Training program. We conducted the following training programs

  • Orientation Program on self-advocacy to parents of PwIDDs
  • One day training program for mentors
  • 6 weeks training program for self-advocates including election of office bearers

  • Impact
  • Parents are very enthusiastic to participate in self-advocacy training with PwIDDs
  • Parents felt this is a useful training for their children
  • They wanted to bring changes in lives of PwIDDS
  • Trainer and mentors had an opportunity to understand abilities of self-advocacy
  • Misconception of the person with disabilities was ruled out from mentors and parents
  • Improvement in self-advocates where observed during the training and after the training where social behavior, friendliness and leadership qualities
  • Self-advocates and parents are coming forward to share their problem/difficulties and changes in their day-to-day life
